Lexus GS 450h Overview

Lexus GS 450h Overview
There are three variants of the GS available, the 350 (in rear-wheel or all-wheel drive), the 460 and the 450h. The base model carries a 3.5-liter V6 under the hood, while the 460 has a 4.6-liter V8. The hybrid is powered by both a 3.5-liter engine and an electric motor, for a total system output of 340 hp. The 350 has a standard 6-speed transmission, but the 460 ups it to eight speeds. The 450h is in a drivetrain class of its own, with an electronic continuously variable transmission. All three models can reach 60 mph from a standstill in just over 5 seconds.

The GS has a lot of high-tech goodies, such as the SmartAccess sensor system, which allows the car to be unlocked by touching the door handle or trunk, then started with the push of a button. Holding the unlock button on the key fob as you approach the car rolls down all the windows. Available parking assist provides alerts to objects in the way and dynamic radar cruise control maintains a safe distance from the car in front while cruising on the highway.

Safety systems are state-of-the-art, too. Direct tire pressure monitoring, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, a 10-airbag setup, traction control and rain-sensing windshield wipers are standard. The Vehicle Dynamics Integrate Management system prevents a loss of traction using individual-wheel braking and throttle activation. On the 460, it works with the variable gear-ratio steering to maintain control. The available adaptive headlights that help drivers see around bends in the road are standard on the 450h.

Inside, heated and ventilated seats keep front occupants comfy, as does dual-zone climate control. Leather interior with wood trim adds to the GS luxury feel. The standard audio system includes an iPod and Bluetooth, but music connoisseurs will want to upgrade to the Mark Levinson 14-speaker system. The available navigation system can incorporate a rearview camera, as well. The biggest difference between the gasoline-only GS interior and the hybrid is an energy monitor that shows the power flow from engine to motor and back again.

For 2010, the Lexus RX series comes in two versions: the RX 350 and the RX 450h. Both can be had in either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations. Both versions seat five comfortably, with this year's redesign resulting in greater legroom and shoulder room for both front and rear passengers.

The RX 350's 3.5L V6 powerplant has been updated for 2010, resulting in 275 horsepower and 257 pound-feet of torque-an increase of 5 horses and 6 pound-feet over last year's configuration. A new 6-speed automatic is now standard, replacing last year's 5-speed unit, and helping to bump fuel mileage to 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. The all-wheel drive version utilizes a new Active Torque Control system, which uses an electromagnetic coupler to split engine power between the front and rear axles, replacing the center differential and saving a reported 66 pounds in weight.

The RX 450h replaces last year's RX 400h, and features a unique front grille assembly and blue-tinted headlamp and taillamp covers as well as unique badging. A new 3.5L Atkinson-cycle engine replaces last year's 3.3L unit, making 245 horsepower and 234 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive versions receive a 167-horse supplemental electric motor, while all-wheel drive versions get a 67-horse electric motor driving the rear wheels. Combined fuel economy is 27 mpg for front-wheel drive versions and 28 mpg for all-wheel drive examples. The 450h utilizes a CVT transmission as well as a unique exhaust-heat recovery system, which helps shorten warm up times, allowing for less use of the gasoline engine. It can run on one or both of its power systems, providing an excellent balance in acceleration and fuel economy.

The 2010 Mazda Tribute is the smallest crossover SUV in the zoom-zoom family, but it’s big on utility. Under the Tribute’s hood is a 171-horsepower, 2.5-liter inline-four or an all-aluminum 240-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6, both of which have variable cam technology and earn the Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle award. A hybrid version is also available. Drivetrain options include two- and all-wheel drive, and a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. The Tribute earned 18-22 mpg city and 23-28 mpg highway ratings from the EPA.

For added environmental friendliness, both engines are now Flex Fuel capable. Horsepower and fuel economy are competitive with the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4; of particular importance, the Honda CR-V does not offer a V-6, meaning the Tribute is a much higher-powered vehicle when properly equipped. Functionality is high with over 1,100 pounds of payload capacity and up to a 3,500-pound tow rating.
