There are three variants of the GS available, the 350 (in rear-wheel or all-wheel drive), the 460 and the 450h. The base model carries a 3.5-liter V6 under the hood, while the 460 has a 4.6-liter V8. The hybrid is powered by both a 3.5-liter engine and an electric motor, for a total system output of 340 hp. The 350 has a standard 6-speed transmission, but the 460 ups it to eight speeds. The 450h is in a drivetrain class of its own, with an electronic continuously variable transmission. All three models can reach 60 mph from a standstill in just over 5 seconds.

The GS has a lot of high-tech goodies, such as the SmartAccess sensor system, which allows the car to be unlocked by touching the door handle or trunk, then started with the push of a button. Holding the unlock button on the key fob as you approach the car rolls down all the windows. Available parking assist provides alerts to objects in the way and dynamic radar cruise control maintains a safe distance from the car in front while cruising on the highway.

Safety systems are state-of-the-art, too. Direct tire pressure monitoring, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, a 10-airbag setup, traction control and rain-sensing windshield wipers are standard. The Vehicle Dynamics Integrate Management system prevents a loss of traction using individual-wheel braking and throttle activation. On the 460, it works with the variable gear-ratio steering to maintain control. The available adaptive headlights that help drivers see around bends in the road are standard on the 450h.

Inside, heated and ventilated seats keep front occupants comfy, as does dual-zone climate control. Leather interior with wood trim adds to the GS luxury feel. The standard audio system includes an iPod and Bluetooth, but music connoisseurs will want to upgrade to the Mark Levinson 14-speaker system. The available navigation system can incorporate a rearview camera, as well. The biggest difference between the gasoline-only GS interior and the hybrid is an energy monitor that shows the power flow from engine to motor and back again.

The 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 Hybrid is available in a variety of combinations. There are six trims available: the base Work Truck, the SL, the SLE, the luxury SLT, the top-tier Denali and the Xtra Fuel Economy trim. Three cabs and three cargo bed sizes are available.

The base Work Truck trims come with 4.3L V6 gas-only engine that makes 195 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 Hybrid utilizes a 6.0L V8 gas/electric engine linked to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to produce 332 horsepower and 367 pound-feet of torque. It is a full hybrid, meaning it is able to run on both gasoline and battery power or solely on electric power, depending on load demands. For 2010, the Lexus RX series comes in two versions: the RX 350 and the RX 450h. Both can be had in either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations. Both versions seat five comfortably, with this year's redesign resulting in greater legroom and shoulder room for both front and rear passengers.

Combined fuel economy is 27 mpg for front-wheel drive versions and 28 mpg for all-wheel drive examples. The 450h utilizes a CVT transmission as well as a unique exhaust-heat recovery system, which helps shorten warm up times, allowing for less use of the gasoline engine. It can run on one or both of its power systems, providing an excellent balance in acceleration and fuel economy.

The second-generation Highlander Hybrid gas/electric SUV was introduced in 2008. The Highlander can operate in an all-electric mode that can be used for limited distances. Five- and seven-seat models are available. Base and Limited trims are offered, and the hybrid is only available with all-wheel drive. The 2010 Honda Civic returns virtually unchanged from 2009, continuing in sedan and coupe body styles and again offering a gas-electric hybrid model. Choose a sedan over a coupe for the best blend of cabin space and ride quality.And go for the 2010 Honda Civic LX trim level (one step up from the base DX) for the best value in the Civic line. That gets you a spry compact car packed with features at a competitive $18,400 or so with automatic transmission.
Top-line Honda Civic EX-L versions start near $22,000, money better spent on the larger Honda Accord. Sporty Honda Civic Si models top $22,000, too -- though they’re worth it. Honda Civic lineup starts with the frugal Civic DX, then builds up to LX, EX, and EX-L models. Each of those models come with a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine, making 140-horspower and hooked up to either a 5-speed manual transmission or 5-speed automatic. Si models get, in addition to a range of performance upgrades, a 197-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with a 6-speed manual transmission. Hybrid models get a version of Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) mild-hybrid system, altogether producing110 horsepower.

Models with the standard engine or Si version are offered either as a 4-door sedan or 2-door coupe. The Coupe version gets a slightly racier image, thanks to a different, more aggressive roofline toward the back and a tilted-back look to the rear fascia. Coupes have a full-size back seat, though entry and exit is a little more difficult. Trunk space is about the same in the Sedan and Coupe-very ample with a low lift-over height in both cases.

The 2010 Honda Civic lineup again begins with the very basic DX sedan and climbs to EX-L sedans and coupes with leather upholstery, sunroof, and a navigation system. The 2010 Mazda Tribute is the smallest crossover SUV in the zoom-zoom family, but it’s big on utility. This gas/electric hybrid car is a five-passenger, 4-door hatchback that mates a 1.3-liter 4-cylinder engine with a battery-powered electric motor for 98 hp. Honda's hybrid system allows Insight to run on one or both of its power sources. Most of the time, however, the gas engine shuts off at a stop and restarts again when the driver releases his or her foot from the brake pedal. No plug-in charging is required. Insight has a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). LX and EX trim levels are available. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. EX comes with cruise control, steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, alloy wheels, heated power mirrors, and an upgraded audio system. A navigation system is available, and Insights so equipped are priced as separate models. They also include a wireless cell-phone link.

It appears that the new 2010 Honda Insight will be offered around the $18,500 price point for a base model, and get somewhere around 60mpg. Now we’re talking… since for that price you really don’t see cars that exceed 36mpg. That means you can buy a new car at a reasonable price and save 40% on gas all in the process. Now we’re saving money!
